This week, the practice of placing "Student Resource Officers"(Howard County Police) in our middle schools will begin. I believe that this is a bad solution to a serious problem. The problem that I am talking about is behavior. Placing police officers in our schools is only a temporary band-aid for bad behavior. They are there to try to stop the fights when they happen. They are, most likely, not going to prevent bad behavior, as students who are going to be violent or misbehave are going to do it whether or not someone is there to stop them.
This is an issue I have special perspective and insight on. It's an issue that I have had the opportunity to see daily in our schools. The real problem is a lack of basic values. Among others, these values are respect, integrity, and honesty. We must instill these values at a young age. Students must learn to be respectful at the beginning of elementary school. This is a long-term solution to a very serious problem. We should wind back the clock and look at previous generations. They did not have the behavior problems that this generation has. They did not need police in their schools. Why? Because they respected each other.
